Refurbishment at Southampton MIU helps the short waiting times fly
May 22 2015
The team at the newly refurbished Minor Injury Unit (MIU) at Royal South Hants Hospital will be on hand to offer help and advice on a wide range of minor injuries this bank holiday weekend.
No appointment necessary, the MIU is open from 8am to 10pm all bank holiday weekend (the last patient is accepted at 9.30pm) and 7.30am to 10pm on weekdays. The team can treat animal and insect bites, minor burns, minor back, chest, eye, head and shoulder injuries and infections.
The centre undertook the refurbishment in order to create a better atmosphere for patients waiting to be treated for minor injuries.
Care UK Hospital director Penny Daniels said: “Average waiting times are generally significantly shorter than those at the Emergency Department and we are seeing around 100 per cent of patients treated within the Government’s targets.
“We have just completed a refurbishment of the centre and improvements have been made to the waiting areas to make them more comfortable for those people awaiting treatment. The new open plan design also enables the team to function more efficiently, keeping waiting times to a minimum.”
The top eight conditions seen at emergency departments that could be treated at the MIU are:
- Soft tissue injury (strains, sprains)
- Bruises, contusions and swellings
- Head injuries
- Non-specific abdominal pains
For minor ailments, such as coughs, colds and sore throats, ask your pharmacist for advice. If you need medical help or advice and aren’t sure where to go, call 111. The service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The Minor Injury Unit is at the Royal South Hants Hospital, Level B, Brintons Terrace, Southampton, S014 0YG.
